OK, so you can probably guess we might be a little biased considering our name Blogology, but nonetheless its a question we want to pose to the Blogosphere.
Is Blogging Art or Science?
With approximately 185 Million blogs worldwide, and Technorati reporting that around 7.4 Million blogposts occured in the last 120 days alone, there is more content being produced than could ever possibly be consumed. The blogosphere is full of not only millions of writers producing prose (art) but, corporations promoting their brand, spammers trying to sell anything you might buy, small businesses trying to market their products and services, entertainers promoting their latest album, and myriad of others using blogs to improve search engine rankings for their main sites or a hundred other purposes.
So quickly the lines get blurred, and asking the question, “Is blogging art or science?” gets tough, and one considers maybe its a combination of the two.
Lets try and defend the position of blogging as art:
- Over 50% of people blog about “Personal or Lifestyle” issues or events.
- When asked why they blog, 79% of bloggers stated, “To speak their mind on their area of interest.”
- 54% of people don’t make any money on their blog… zero!
- When asked many bloggers number one goal is to blog for personal satisfaction, not just money. Similar to an artist, musician or filmmaker in how they create content through their medium out of passion, so do a majority of bloggers.
Next, lets try and defend the position of blogging as science:
- 24% of people blog to make money or supplement their income.
- Almost all bloggers don’t just write content for their blog, as part of the average of 10 hours spent blogging. A good chunk of time is spent trying to drive traffic, update technical aspects of their blog, studying analytics (95% of bloggers track their visitors) and utilizing other blog tools designed to promote their blog.
- The majority of bloggers have advertising or another method of revenue generation on their blogs.
- Ultimately, one might argue that since so much time is spent in blogging on areas other than creating content, Blogging becomes more science than art.
